Peter tastes local politics, the Joba horse-riding machine, and more info on blood types
Today I took a couple of hours off work to participate in local politics, heading down to sit in on a session of the Prefectural Assembly about my son's special English school. Although the lawmakers have voted to financially support the school, which teaches the standard Japanese curriculum but with all classes except for Japanese and social studies taught in English, there's an impasse due to opposition by the Prefectural Governor. At the most recent debate on the issue, a few dozen parents gathered to show their support for the school, and I brought a little "gaijin power" to the mix, since having an American in a group will get attention -- the local TV station was there and kept zooming in on me during the debate. It was my first time to see the law-making process in Japan up close, and although it was like watching C-Span dubbed in a foreign language without the ability to change the channel for 90 minutes, it was educational, too. I certainly learned that my prefecture has plenty of money in its budget for beautiful facilities for its legislators to work in, although the educational budget is stretched to the limit...

I'm prety sure that there's something in the Geneva Convention about making people watch foreign-language C-SPANfor a period of time longer than it takes to change the channel (about 1/2 second). If I were you, I'd file a complaint. On the other hand, Dubya has had some trouble recently with the Convention and questioning terrorist suspects in Guantanamo.
Man, the last time I heard something about blood types in the U.S.A. was on an episode of King of the Hill where Peggy Hill was "competing" with a neighbor as to who could donate an amount of blood first. Probably the only line I remember from that series was a bout of smack-talk where the neighbor says something akin to, "Yeah? I'm O-: universal donor." Peggy responds, "I'm AB-. My blood is liquid gold!" On that note, is the Rhesus factor (the +/- suffix in blood types signaling the presence or lack of rhesus antigens) just not that important in Japanese blood-type categorization? (FYI: I'm O+, the most common blood type, and I only learned that after I donated blood about three years ago.)
Since I forget it last post, I found a new overseas (to you, at least) drama you and your family may like. From SciFi channel (the good people who brought you the new Battlestar Galactica) comes the story of the biggest military secret in American history: the small Pacific northwest town of Eureka. After WWII, Albert Einstein petitioned the U.S. government to create a haven for the greatest scientific minds in the world, where they could work on weapons of mass destruction in peace. U.S. Marshal Jack Carter, like any other American, had no idea of its existance until a car accident leads him there. Now, Jack Carter is the sheriff of Eureka, the only place in the world where the laws of science are broken more often than the traffic code...and you thought your job was hard.

I never understood what + and - were in blood. And strangely, the Japanese seem to ignore that aspect of blood altogether. Go fig.
Oh, Eureka is on my list to watch. Is season 1 over yet? I've got to get Deadwood season 3, and about ten different anime series (Onegai Twins is the best show I've seen since Kiminozo), and, and... ^_^

Essentially, the Rhesus factor is just another set of antigens on the surface of red blood cells, but, unlike the "A" and "B" antigens, the body of a "negative" does not produce antibodies against the antigen. So it's really a hypothetical "C" blood type, but not that important to look at, as risk of bodily rejection of a transfusion is much less than mismatching the A and B antigens.
No, Eureka's still in its first season. There's about eight episodes on iTunes now, and the next new episode should premier on the TV Thursday night, our time. What is that in Japan, Friday evening...ish?

Man, Dead Zone has 5 seasons? Crap... Don't ask me why Yin Yang is late ^_^
