Thoughts on biculturalism and Halloween, types of ramen you should try, and my fascination with Japanese females
Happy Halloween from J-List. Halloween is one of those "American" holidays (although originally Irish and Scottish) that has a way of working its way around the world, and although Japan doesn't exactly need an excuse to engage in cosplay, what with their strong tradition of dressing in anime costumes and all, awareness of October 31st grows here year by year. Raising kids who are part of two countries has always been a challenge for my wife and I since we want them to really be a part of both, which means (on the American side, at least) having a cultural awareness of things like trick-or-treating and Scooby Doo and being able to sing the School House Rock songs (they can). So we've gone out of our way to make trips to the U.S. for Halloween and Thanksgiving, not on our regular travel schedule, although it was a lot easier to do when the kids were small and didn't have the pressure of school to deal with. This year we decided to be traditional, and carved a (fairly ugly-looking) Jack-o'-lantern. We had a bit of culture shock when I asked my mother-in-law for a candle to put inside the pumpkin: the only ones she had in the house were the long candles for lighting at the family's Buddhist altar in remembrance of the dead...which is actually closer to Halloween's original meaning, if you think about it.

Still trying to shake out the bugs from the new format. Any feedback for me? (I'll be sort of unifying the blog layout, the website and our mails so that we can enter the 21st century finally).

hi,peter!
yes, the new format is much better. seeing the little pic with the product is very helpful. you had been doing that on the side-blog, but I like it better on the "front page", so to speak, because I always go there first.
it's 7AM for me, guess it's 8PM there (I have this set on the i-phone). a great thing, ne?
8:12 PM
Thanks, it's coming along. Can't get any work done with all this work ^_^

I know what you mean about the iPhone by the way. I currently am iPhoneless -- I leant mine to my wife who was on her way to the U.S., but she forgot it there. I hate not having that thing with me all the time. How else can I email reminders to myself in bed?
10:34 PM
the battery drains down awful fast, don't you think? but yeah, I like to leave notes to myself, also, the stopwatch feature I use at work all the time.
9:46 AM
Yes, I play with mine all the time, so that kills the battery. If you look stuff up 3-4 times a day, do mail for 15-30 minutes, take 5-6 phone calls, it's fine. But I sit there on Wikipedia whenever I get the chance, giggling evilly.

Pumpkins are supposed to be ugly - the better to scare away the goblins so you can keep all the candy!
You know - instead of a fetish, that might be a torture method - what did you do wrong (lately)? {{:-)
{e-mail reminders} how about any of a dozen used Palm Pilot models from eBay? If you carry a little bag, you could also carry around an MP3 player, and an unlocked cell phone or 2, and maybe even a camera - oh wait, I guess that's why you want your iPhone back ...
What on Wikipedia makes you giggle evilly?
1:45 PM
Oh, just giggling because I can stand there and have the internet in public places. It's cool doing things like, standing in line for a roller coaster while reading about its history. Googling the history of Annapolis while walking around, that kind of thing. Really cool.

I can relate to the chin hairs thing! My Japanese girlfriend did the same thing. As she explains, pulling out the hair and seeing its root with lots of white stuff is satisfying and gives a desireable sense of accomplishment. Chin hairs are likely to have this large root, thus a bigger sense of accomplishment... I still don't understand that basic desire, though.
