Hello from Las Vegas

Hello from Las Vegas, where my wife and I have come for some R&R without the kids, which is always a fun thing for married couples to do. While sampling the various casinos and other attractions the city has to offer (including Penn & Teller, which I recommend to everyone), we've been having some interesting conversations with the other tourists we've met here, including many Europeans, getting into debates about things like how there can be so many distinct accents in the U.K. My wife was taken aback at my talking with strangers at first -- after all, it's rare to have a deep conversation with someone you don't already know in more reserved Japan unless you're already comfortable with each other, and to an extent, aware of each others' role in the group, if there is a group. But she came around, realizing that it's quite interesting to strike up a conversation with someone nearby and learn about Oklahoma or Florida or France. I feel sorry for the many Japanese tourists who come to America but miss out on the chance to make new friends, either because of language barriers or needless clinging to invisible social rules.

So who loves Vegas? My wife and I just love it here, although I know many can't take the chaos.

It's all about the company you travel with! I had a great time with a college friend, but just an okay time with my husband.

I'm pretty introverted, but have a great time with the right people and cocktails. The chaos is perfect, then.

Yes, true. Vegas is good because you can ignore whatever rules you want. I have fun with my wife and fun with like-minded guys, but wouldn't want to come here with my sister, who things God is about to crush the city due to its status as the "sinning" capital of the world. Which kind of fails the evidence test since the place is booming like crazy.

I was in Las Vegas for a technical conference at the same time. Sorry we missed each other. But I hate the place (since I don't gamble).

When I lived in Japan I found many Japanese would strike up a conversation with me, probably precisely because I wasn't Japanese. I was warned that many Japanese would want to 'practice their English on me', but this largely wasn't true. Every few days I would have a casual chat with someone, though. Oh, this was always at their instigation. I learned quickly that I could not initate the conversation.

I gamble very little. I find running a business as much thrill in that area as I need. Interesting about the conversations you've had. I find that if children are around, I can do something cute with them which will lead to a conversation with the parents, when they see I'm not going to eat their children ^_^
