Bring on the Foreign Babies
I write a lot about how Japan is a homogenous place where everyone considers themselves as having come from the same genetic stock, which can be a useful vehicle for creating a more harmonious society despite the fact that there's actually quite a lot of variation in the local genetic make-up, with plenty of Korean, Mongolian, Russian, Ainu and other DNA hiding under the surface (including some I've contributed). The famous Japanese uniformity might be changing in the near future, though. A new statistic was recently released showing that one in 30 babies born in Japan had at least one foreign-born parent, reflecting both imigration as well as the popularity of kokusai kekkon (international marriage), currently 6.6% of all registered marriages. Japan is a fabulous country, but I for one would love to see some alternate cultural influences here, whether from Korea, Brazil, America or wherever, and an increase in foreigners settling here and raising families would help a lot. My half-Japanese daughter regularly has issues with the other kids who can't seem to understand why she's not completely in sync with them, but if each class had more students who were haafu or who came from other cultures outright, it'd be more acceptable to stand out. Remember my crazy theory that Japanese/foreign couples are less likely to fall into the same "sexless" rut that Japanese couples sometimes get mired in, and thus by intermingling with Japanese, we foreigners can do our part to help repopulate Japan.

Of course, the number of imigrant/foreign babies being born in the UK right now is......1 in 5.

I'm not sure Japanese have less babies because they have less sex. I think it has to do with the fact they are very responsible and think of how many babies they can raise with their income. It takes more than food and education, now a days you take your kids to second language studies, sports, give them computers, trips, there's so much you have to afford!
Besides, legend tells Japanese are quite cray about sex and they have the chance to do it, hihihihi...

They are more responsible, yes, and less likely to have accidents, that's true. I have a niece who has had three kids before the age of 24, the third one conceived right as she was about to divorce her husband. Kind of makes our blood run cold, since no one would be so "ii kagen" (selfish, unrealistic) here, or one hopes not anyway. Still, some of the lower number of babies is due to stress here, and the high costs, and the "everyone else is also stopping at one or two children" social factors. If you have 6+ kids in Japan, TV crews will come to your house and film documentaries about you.

This was an interesting read. 1 out of 30 babies born in Japan had at least one foreign born parent. For some reason I had assumed that this stat was more like from the last decade or the decade before considering how many haafu talents that had popped up this decade. Even non talents I’ve seen either working at Haneda or Narita. I personally think it is cool to see. Although I wouldn’t like to see that takeover the population.
I can’t comment on the Japanese couples sexless rut theory. Ha, ha, ha. But I could understand that, that is a possibility because of the stress and or the workaholic husband.
I can relate to your daughter having issues regularly with the other kids. Being born in Tokyo and raised in California, kids here back in elementary and middle school (late 70’s/early 80’s), just didn’t ‘understand’ me being Japanese with a Japanese name. Very ignorant times.
So I hope you’re daughter is dealing with it as best she can even though I can’t imagine it being worse than what I went through....But Gambatte kudasai!
Thank you for your time.
Taka
