Hey gaijin! You are "good head"
I've written about how speaking a foreign language requires a special "other" sense, which the Japanese call kan (kahn). If you are kan ga ii (having a good sense about abstract things) you might be able to figure out that someone who compliments you by saying you are "good head" is probably telling you you're smart, since atama ga ii (good head) is how you express intelligence in Japanese. But while a big part of interacting with people from other language groups means understanding what they're saying to you even if it's not communicated clearly -- like when my wife asked for "gross lipstick" for Christmas, meaning gloss -- there are times when you need to get meaning across to others. When my mother was visiting from the U.S., I left her alone with my kids as much as possible so they could have lots of time practicing their English with her. (Apparently I register as a Japanese person to them, since they know I speak Japanese, and they speak almost no English when I'm in the room.) My daughter was saying something about how much fun she'd had at Sea World in San Diego the previous summer, but she couldn't remember the English word for the animals she'd seen. So she used her imagination, flapping her hands together like flippers and barking like a seal until my mother knew what she was talking about.

In other news, did you know that the word for brains in Japanese is noh-miso, lit. the "miso paste of the brain"?

It's not just Japan where that happens Peter, I've heard some of it when I was stationed in Germany and Korea. It is funny when that happens and you automatically know what the person is talking about. Makes me miss 'ole Duetchland.

I find I can "guess" the meaning of Spanish I see in Twitter that way too. Before I know it I'm reading several long strings without thinking deeply about it, despite the fact that I don't understand Spanish ^_^

I work at SeaWorld San Diego ^_^ I'm glad your daughter enjoyed it.

Awesome! Wow, that's really 偶然 guuzen (a coincidence). What do you do there? I remember getting a summer pass and going several times during the summer, back when I was a kid.

I work part-time for the glass-blower, nothing fancy, just putting the jewelery together and manning the register.
Its a good job for people watching since SeaWorld gets lots of tourists :)

Hey Peter!
I have a question for you. Remember the "R" rated Wasabi-Mayonaise Cheetos? Were they really limited edition, or did they maybe, possibly decide to make them a permanent flavour after all? Because I'd be really happy about that. Because they are divine. How can you not make them a permanent flavour? (I never really see the point of limited editions, especially when they are for food. People always like food, and if they like the flavour, they will continue buying it. Won't they earn a lot more if they simply continue to sell it? *sigh* :( )
I'm about to sacrifice three bags of our stash (currently at only 17 bags left) for a birthday. But it breaks my heart to see them go. Why are they so freaking small, anyway? >_< Who puts merely 75 grams of chips in a bag?
So I would be really happy if you could tell me that they forgot about the "Limited Edition" nonsense and released these proper after all.
...maybe I should only bring 2 bags to the Birthday after all...I'll bring some extra Wasabi peanuts instead...and some dessert Pocky.
So, any hope?

They were great, but alas, they disappeared. I hope they'll be back as a permanent thing but really, that's Japan -- they do something for a period of time and then it's "lot up," meaning that's it, no more, move on to something else. Those things were great though. I also am missing the wasabi Doritos.
