Japan [hearts] Mayonnaise

There are certain things the Japanese just seem to really like for reasons that are difficult for foreigners to understand. Like the Carpenters, whose music seems to be far more popular here than in the U.S. Or Colombo, whose crime-solving gruffness is popular enough that he can still be seen regularly on TV here. Or novels by Sydney Sheldon, who has large number of fans in Japan. Another thing the Japanese like a lot is...mayonnaise! It's true: the Japanese eat it all the time, putting it in salads, on traditional Japanese dishes like Okonomiyaki, and even on pizza. When you order french fries at a Denny's, they'll bring you two little dishes, one containing ketchup and the other mayonnaise, and you can dip the fries in whichever condiment you like, or go for both (which is my own preference).

A popular way to eat mayonnaise. Yech!

Well, Japan is Japan, so it is understandable why their tastes are different from non-Japanese. I do like mayonnaise, but not as much as the Japanese do. I am quite picky about choosing the right mayonnaise for my burger, since only certain type of mayonnaise goes well with hamburger. I think it is called 'Western Mayonnaise'? And yes Pieter S, I agreed with you. French fries are better with mayonnaise than ketchup.

Piter, heh, I remember seeing the "frietsaus" (sp?) in Holland, which wasn't free, I remember. Silly American that I am, I actually took a "Pulp Fiction" tour of Europe and ate Le Big Mac, etc. I find mixing ketchup and mayonnaise is quite good.

Seiray, you're making me hungry. I love a good hamburger with too many pickles, plenty of ketchup and mayonnaise, and those purple onions that you unfortunately can't get in Japan.

Yes we also have a sause called 'cocktail' which tastes like mayo+ketchup next to tens of other mayo-based sauces. and yes in holland they have frietsaus! but they have odd tastebuds over there, so i dont trust it.
Just like the japanese there are belgians who eat mayonnaise on everything. kind of like Hijikata Toshiro from Gintama. quite disgusting if you think about it.

I am very sorry to make you feel hungry =( Pickles? I hate them. Purple onions huh? I don't remember seeing those in a hamburger before.

Hmm, The Carpenters and Sydney Sheldon are pretty popular in China and Taiwan too, so maybe it's an Asian thing, rather than a Japanese thing.

So can you get a cigarette lighter that looks like the mayonnaise bottle like the guy in Gintama has?

Peter's post about the Japanese putting mayo on everything reminded me of a dorama called 'Osen'. A few days ago, I re-watched the episode where a youngster is squeezing ketchup on everything he eats, complaining Japanese food is too bland without it. To Osen's dismay, he isn't really tasting anything that the chefs had diligently prepared, but the pre-fabricated taste from the factory.

That said, i developed a real taste for mayonnaise in Japan. I recall one wintry night in Tokyo, I was so broke that I just had hot rice with some Kewpie mayonnaise, and a little soy sauce...it was so good!
