Takarazuka: Girls Who Look Like Boys

It seems that every time I notice a really attractive Japanese actress on TV, like the talented Hitomi Kuroki, my wife tells me, "Yes, she was a Takarazuka performer, that's why she has a kind of power about her." Takarazuka is an all-female theatre troupe founded in 1914 that's kind of the female answer to Kabuki, the all-male theatre tradition that dates back to the Edo Period. In Takarazuka, all the performances are done by women, and the skill with which the male roles are performed is really amazing to see. Just as Kabuki deals with Japanese stories, Takarazuka gets its inspiration from the West, performing stories like Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and to the Rose of Versailles -- there's even a stage version of the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game ("Objection!"). To be a Takarazuka performer is a hard life, and those who succeed seem to have an aura of poise and grace around them, often going on to enjoy amazing careers. Another former Takarazuka being talked about these days is Miyuki Hatoyama, the wife of the new Prime Minister. (Yes, the one who insists she flew to Venus in a UFO.)

I'm fascinated by the enigmatic women of Takarazuka.

I sincerely believe she flew to Venus and am jealous of her voyage.

Another elegant former Takarazuka is Amami Yuki, I would love to be walked on by her wearing high heels (her, not me).

Just saw the second Phoenix Wright musical. Both have been amazing. Sure cheesy but that's half of what Takarazuka is.

Sena Jun was always one of my favorites but she recently graduated.

I remember a drama I watched once, with the girls of Morning Musume trying pass themselves off as Takarazuka. That was the biggest FAIL I can remember...

The way you describe it, I was reminded of the Imperial Opera Troupe in "Sakura Wars". I wonder if the Takarazuka was an inspiration for the game/anime series.

This reminds me that there's an episode of Kimagure Orange Road that opens with the hero and Madoka watching a performance of Gone With the Wind with an all-female cast. I always though there was a reference there to something not stated in the episode but expected to be known to the Japanese audience...

Yes, that episode was pretty important for me too, the Takarazuka episode where a girl fell in love with Madoka. Best use of a hand-powered train car in anime yet. ^_^

Morning Musume have in fact shared scenary with Takarazuka twice. Takahashi Ai is a big fan of them and always dreamed of become part of it. She's of course the most talented singer in Momusu's history and she has stared both of the plays with Takarazuka.
Btw, no fail at all.

Ah, sorry. I was just giving my impression of the group overall, who obviously weren't chosen for their acting skills. ^_^
