Have You Put On Some Weight?
Have you gained some weight? If you're a big person and come to Japan, be prepared to hear light-hearted comments about your weight, especially if you put on some weight. Although it's usually taboo to make mention of a person's girth in the U.S., in Japan it's quite common to start a conversation with a friend by asking him if he's gained weight recently. It's not fun, but you get used to it quickly enough, and the Japanese mean no harm in it -- it's just a kind of small talk, like talking about the weather. (I've also been asked, "Are you a professional wrestler?")
Perhaps because Japanese are thin, mentioning weight isn't such a taboo.

That thing is real?! By the gods...
This seems like one of those things that you really couldn't get angry or upset over unless someone said it to you in a really malicious way. I get the feeling that unless you were REALLY confident in your language skills you would probably think you misheard them anyway

C1ancy, heh, maybe not, although that was mostly marketing fluff. It was only available for a week and only 30 could buy them. That sure was damned effective marketing though. I totally know that a product called Windows 7 exists now...
Ryuuguu, yes, and really, there's a kernal of kindness there too, e.g. are you gaining some weight? Maybe you're working too much? I just laugh it off.

To be honest, if someone is about to get offended by someone asking if you put on weight you probably have some esteem issues concerning it...probably wasn't such a wise choice to visit a place were most of the population is significantly smaller than you :/

A professional wrestler, huh? I could see that.
