Japanese and Omiyage (Souvenirs)

If you ever visit Japan, it's good manners to bring gifts called omiyage (oh-mee-YAH-gay) to Japanese you will be visiting or who you might encounter. Some items, like boxes of chocolates, beef jerky, and macadamia nuts from Hawaii are so famous that they're almost cliched, but will still be appreciated by anyone who receives them from you. Yasu recommends you bring some items that Americans take for granted but which Japanese might find quite unique, like A-1 Steak Sauce or rare flavors of bubble gum. I think anything from your part of the world would make a good gift, and if your city or state is famous for something, a gift representing that is a good idea. One word of warning: giving gifts can expose you to a "gift war" in which you end up getting many more gifts than you can use, as Japanese are very serious about o-kaeshi, or giving a return gift when they receive one. I'll be returning to Japan soon, so I'm on the lookout for interesting souvenirs for the J-List staff, who have worked so hard during my extended trip to the U.S. What cool American stuff you think I should bring them?
Which omiyage would you like?

I would bring them a bunch of York Peppermint patties. Since they use to be made in my hometown - York, PA.

Maple syrup, the real kind, not the imitation stuff. It's so expensive in Japan, but relatively unexpensive here, so stock up and bring a few ^^

Peter, first let this Grandmother tell you that I throughly enjoy my J-list emails, so thank you very much!

Now my idea, for an item to take back to Japan, would be a Cheesehead hat! It's an item that can be difficult to find outside of Wisconsin but would be worth it to see the expression on their faces! It was the first thing I thought of when you suggested regional items!

I'm from St. Louis so I would take back some White Castle Hamburgers in dry ice. You can also order them online and have them shipped to you but it can be expensive. Ohh, or another good thing would be BBQ or smoked ribs (yes there is a difference) from St. Louis or Kansas City.

Maple sugar candies. More of an east coast thing but still yummy.

How about you buy them clothes or hats of either your high school or college?

Stick deodorant. Something we seriously take for granted. xD

Maltheus, but then it'd be the American stuff, which is pretty unwatchable when you've lived in Japan for as long as I have. One almost (almost) comes to appreciate the mosaic as a preserver of mystery.

Good suggestions, everyone. My wife also added a requests for melatonin and zinc, plus I always bring Advil, because if you have a headache and no Advil, you are so screwed.

Actually for the J-Liat crew I always bring our t-shirts too, since we like to wear our own stuff (the ones we can wear in japan, that is).

As Anthony Bourdain once put it, "Oklahoma Joe's is the best barbecue in Kansas City, and that makes it the best barbecue in the world."

From here in Oregon, the thing to take would be salmon jerky. Unique and very tasty. (Also very expensive, but...)

A Japanese friend brings back honey roasted almonds or peanuts from Trader Joes when she goes back. Says they go over very well.

After watching jap porn for a while you do get used to the censoring but the truth of matter is that in the end it really is nothing more than annoyance. Sometimes some girls just have absolutely gorgeous looking pussy's and the with the censoring you would never know which really sucks!

The only way I would american porn is unwatchable is when they go over the top with the anal scenes or just the violence like max hardcore.

Two things. First, I love how dirty this thread suddenly got. Two, I would get some goober peanut butter. You know the one where they mix the Grape/Strawberry Jelly and peanut butter together. I'm thinking you won't find that in Japan.
